Enforcement Directorate has filed a money laundering case against 29 actors, influencers and YouTubers for allegedly promoting illegal betting applications. Such an act violates the Public Gambling Act. Film actors Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Nidhi Agarwal and Pranitha Subhash are among those who have been booked by the ED. The probe, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, has been taken up based on five FIRs filed in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Sources said that the ED suspects endorsements of platforms including Junglee Rummy, A23, JeetWin, Parimatch and Lotus365 involved in laundering of large sums through paid promotions.
A comprehensive investigation is underway to find the estimated amount of the proceeds of crime generated by these apps and the exact role of the celebrities.
The ED took up the case after a complainant alleged a loss of over 3 crore rupees after being influenced by YouTube adverts featuring these personalities. Besides, film personalities V and media personalities and digital creators like Harsha Sai, Bayya Sunny Yadav, Tastyteja, and the YouTube channel ‘Local Boy Nani’. Kiran Goud and the management teams behind the betting platforms have also been named. Some of the promotions were reportedly disguised as entertainment or social service, drawing public ire and triggering police complaints from individuals who claimed to have suffered financial losses. The individuals named in the case are expected to be summoned shortly for questioning.
